On Sunday, it was the Hindu festival of Diwali. Our curriculum includes respecting different cultures around the world so today we have celebrated the event in reception.
We learned about what Diwali is this morning; How and why people celebrate Diwali. We discovered that there are fireworks 'just like bonfire night' and gift giving 'like at Christmas.' We learned that rather than worshiping one God, like Catholics do, Hindu's worship lots of different Gods.
We spent the morning making Rangoli patterns in the tuff tray with buttons, colouring our own Rangoli patterns, tracing henna tattoos on handprints and we even managed to squeeze in some Diwali-themed maths work too!
Then this afternoon we read the story of Rama and Sita. We enjoyed reading about the monkey king, Hanuman, and how the animals helped to save the day! We made stick puppets and coloured pictures of our favourite characters. We made our own Diwa lamps to light the way for Rama and Sita.
